Hydrangeas Flower Poem

Red Among Blue Hydrangeas by Jason Drury

We lost you in April

During the rains

it was as if the sky was grieving

we lost you right before the blooms

that awake during the crisp morning

we lost you, and it is April again

they speak to you now in silence

and in memory

we lost you…yes

maybe physically

but, I see you during the spring

where life is full and lush

I see you in the cardinals

they fly free in ribbons of gold

this is where I see you

among blue hydrangeas

Hydrangeas Scientific Name and its origin

Hydrangeas is a species of flowering plant which is a deciduous shrub belonging to the family of Hydrangeaceae, native to Japan.

These flower plants are cultivated all across the world in different climates and it should not be confused with H. aspera 'Macrophylla'.

Common Names of Hydrangea

According to britannica.com

‘hydrangea, (genus Hydrangea), any of a genus of erect or climbing woody shrubs, in the family Hydrangeaceae, native to the Western Hemisphere and eastern Asia. About 23 species are known. Several species are grown in greenhouses and gardens for their showy, usually ball-like flower clusters.

Hills-of-snow, or wild hydrangea (H. arborescens), a shrub slightly more than 1 metre (4 feet) tall, has rounded clusters of white flowers. The French hydrangea, or hortensia (H. macrophylla), is widely cultivated in many varieties for its large globular flower clusters in colours of rose, lavender, blue, and, rarely, white. These cultivated varieties are the florist’s hydrangeas, forced for holiday use. The flower colour is variable, depending on the acidity of the growing medium: rose-pink under neutral to low soil acidity and blue under conditions of stronger acidity. Blue flowers can be produced by the early addition of chemicals to increase the acidity of the growing medium.

Hydrangeas Flower Types & Varieties

Though there are many types of hydrangeas, yet the most common types of hydrangea that are grown are as follows:

1.    Hydrangea arborescens

Hydrangea arborescens is a wise choice for colder environments since it blooms on new wood and isn't irritated by pre-summer snows. H. arborescens plants endure light shade too.

2.   Hydrangea macrophylla

Hydrangea macrophylla (Commonly called French or mophead Hydrangea) was initially grown in China and Japan. Numerous types endure wind and salt showers. Luckily for the plant lovers or gardeners in colder zones, late Hydrangea cultivation is more probable to bloom with growth as well as year-old stems, and that implies flowers are ensured even after an extreme winter.

More about HYDRANGEAS?

Hydrangeas are valued for their late summer flower and are treated as versatile flowers that thrive in all situations and seasons.

Larger growing hydrangeas may become tree-like and the shrub-like hydrangeas.  Macrophylla make great border plants in the garden.

Some of these hydrangeas also grow pretty well in flower pots and even in containers.

They grow in different colors such as white, pink, red, purple and blue. The truest blue grows the best in acidic soil.

Lace cap hydrangeas have a central corymb of small, fertile flowers surrounded by showy, colored bracts;

Mop heads (or hortensias) have domed heads of sterile bracts only. H. paniculata cultivars bear larger though fewer cone-shaped flower heads if pruned hard in spring.
